Anthony Joshua and Otto Wallin are pretty familiar with one another. Even with a brief exchange a few years ago, the two heavyweights believe their fight will steal the show on December 23. In Saudi Arabia, the fight and card airs on DAZN PPV.
Joshua is British boxing royalty, holding four gold medals and the title of OBE. He's a former two-time unified heavyweight champion, holding gold from 2016 until 2018, losing the belts against Andy Ruiz Jr. until briefly reclaiming them in 2019. "AJ" is 2-2 in his last four fights and is currently on a two-fight winning streak. A win for the 34-year-old can see a rewarding 2024, with a fight against Deontay Wilder and the potential of competing for gold again on the table.
Wallin is also a multi-time medalist, becoming Sweden’s premier heavyweight fighter. "All In" is on a six-fight win streak since losing against Tyson Fury in 2019 for the WBC heavyweight title. Coming close to dethroning "The Gypsy King," Wallin is ready for the ultimate upset against the favorite in Joshua, whom he helped secure his first world title.
Wallin has 14 wins via knockout since turning pro in 2013. The Swedish fighter almost beat WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury after being considered an afterthought beforehand, forcing Fury to work for 12 rounds with a nasty cut near his eye. Cool, calm, and collected at the pre-fight press conference, Wallin believes Joshua will falter against the pressure he will provide on fight night.
Joshua is a two-time unified heavyweight champion but hasn't held gold since Oleksandr Usyk beat him in 2021. The Swede has held the WBA Continental heavyweight title, the European Union heavyweight title and the WBA Inter-Continental heavyweight title, but never challenged for one of the sport’s top prizes.
Joshua may believe he's given himself an edge over his rival by hiring Ben Davison, Fury’s former coach, as his trainer. However, it's worth noting that Fury dispensed with Davison's services shortly after the Wallin fight.
If Joshua does manage to overcome Wallin today, there are murmurs that a long-rumoured time fight with Wilder could be in the offing. Not an easy one to predict though, as Wallin is a boxer with real pedigree, and opportunities like this one have been few and far between.
'AJ' looks to go three and three for the year after winning an unconvincing decision against Jermaine Franklin in April and brutally knocking out Robert Helenius in August. The former two-time heavyweight champion has already agreed terms to fight Wilder on March 9, as the American is also in action on the Saudi Arabia event against Joseph Parker.
Wallin is no slouch and has only been beaten by heavyweight champion Tyson Fury in his 28-fight professional career. The Swede arguably could have won that fight as Fury suffered a nasty cut above his eye but the ringside doctor refused to call it off.
